clash at Elchingen occurred when an almost-surrounded General
Mack sent out a small force of men to make contact with
what he hoped was a nearby Russian army under General
Austrians, however, found themselves up against Marshal
Ney's VI Corps and immediately occupied the town that
the French had only just been ordered out of by Marshal
Ney attacked Elchingen and an all-morning fight only ended
when the Austrians retreated in the face of French reinforcements
that threatened to trap them.
